Where is the best custard tart in Lisbon?
If you are coming to Lisbon you have to taste the famous custard tarts. They became an international success but it is really in Portugal that you can have the best, a lot of them still based in century old recipes.
Pastéis de Belém are the winners in my list. This historical place has, for me, the best custards in the world. Working since 1837, the Antiga Confeitaria de Belém uses the recipe that came from the Jerónimos Monastery, a big secret that is still producing 20 000 tarts per day – and 45 000 on weekend days.
These are so good that the british newspaper “The Guardian” placed it in the list of the most delicious food to taste in the world – this is an interesting list and a good basis for traveling and you can check it here.
For me, the second spot of the best custard tarts in Lisbon goes to Cristal. Elected the best ones in a national competition in 2009, the pastéis de nata of this pastry from 1941 are delicious. Not too sweet, fresh, they will make the visit to the quarter of Lapa, where the shop is located, worth it.
I will close the podium of the best custard tarts in Lisbon with Aloma, another old place – 7 decades of history -, this time in the quarter of Campo de Ourique. This one is wining the award of best pastel de nata for the last two years in a competition that takes place in Lisbon. Small, but very tasty, these custards will make you happy.
Now you know the best places, try them and don’t forget to put cinnamon on top of the tarts. That is the way locals do it!
