Fado in Lisbon: 6 singers that you have to discover

We always like to talk a bit about fado in our Lisbon tours. Being an unique song to Portugal and one that UNESCO has recognized as Intangible Cultural World Heritage, we love to talk about these nostalgic sounds that sing the Portuguese soul.

I believe that fado is a great door to understand Portugal. Sometimes people ask me for places to listen to fado in Lisbon. Sometimes they just ask where to buy fado in Lisbon and what to buy.

This is my very personal list of favorite fado singers:

6. Carminho
New voice, traditional fado. Born into a family of fadistas, Carminho likes the old fado and this approach together with a very intense and emotional way of performing has seen her becoming one of the most important names of the new generation of fado singers.

5. Raquel Tavares
Raquel is the hurricane of fado. Strong voice, visceral performances and a deep passion for Lisbon in a multitalented artist, that has also won several awards in dancing competitions, for example.

4. Ana Moura

Ana has become one of the most international fado stars, singing with the Rolling Stones and Prince. Husky voice, intense but serene performances, with new fado and some pop influences.

3. Mariza

The biggest star of the new fado generation, Mariza sells out shows in England and several other countries in the world. Very powerful voice and theatrical performances.

2. Cristina Branco

Discrete, elegant and beautiful so see on a stage. Cristina Branco doesn’t show up a lot on TV, she doesn’t give a lot of interviews, but please try to see her live and fall in love.

1. Amália

The diva, the goddess, one of those talents that shows up from 100 to 100 years. It is easy to say that she is incomparable, amazing, fabulous and the reference for all the fado singers that Portugal will have. She already died – and she is so important to Portugal that she is buried at the National Pantheon – so, buy the CD and just be surprised with this lady that never had a singing lesson in her life.
