Lisbon chocolate madness
I am crazy about chocolate. It is my favorite antidepressant and my favorite celebration food. My scale doesn’t like it, but hey, it’s her problem.
The Lisbon chocolate lovers have several spots to be happy. I can put Claudio Corallo’s shop, in Príncipe Real, and Equador on top of the list of great quality chocolate spots in Lisbon. But my favorite chocolate experiences are really in Chiado, not far from there.
1. The Lisbon Chocolate Mousse of Avillez
José Avillez is the food rock star in Portugal these days. With several restaurants in Chiado, Avillez created a crazy good chocolate mousse with a touch of fleur de sel on top. Oh my God! The first time I tasted this one I was sharing a meal with some friends and I simply stop talking. One of them was worried. The other one, knowing me for some years now, just said: ‘Leave her alone now, she is having things’. Yep, she was right. Want to feel the same? Go to Café Lisboa, in Largo São Carlos, have a wonderful meal there and then ask for the queen of the chocolate mousses in Portugal.
2. The Lisbon Chocolate Cake of Landeau
Best chocolate cake ever. I don’t care if there is a company in Portugal that has that name and it is not this one. This one is the king for me. So good that it even conquered the american newspaper “New York Times”. They call it a “devilishly good chocolate cake”, I call it happiness. The Landeau chocolate cake is like the son of a chocolate cake with a chocolate mousse. You can not use your hands to eat it, there is no need for a knife. It just melts in your mouth. Not too sweet – the real chocolate is like this – and a real delight, especially for those grey, boring Winter days. Plus, the cafe where they sell it is small, hidden, cozy, peaceful and the waiters always very kind. Love, love, love this place.
